City of Skies THE VIKING ASSASSIN SERIES Volume 1 Farah Cook Books

Kindle Unlimited but got it as ARC/freebie.Still don't know what the rating system means to others so dropped one off the writing instead of the main stars. It could have been tighter in places but overall the viking legend part and the rest was interesting. Assuming since first book and there is a 1 plus says saga there will be more to come. Noted {after reading the book of course as always} a drop of a star from someone complaining about not enough romance, but since it is not meant to be a 'romance' but an actual readable book with a storyline and real plot, I for one never pay attention to how much romance is in a book, a regular real book, it is just the first of a series so it's not as if even if there will be that it should be showing up all in your face type, and even 'romance' books should not have them falling in 'love' off the bat much less anything else.

City of Skies THE VIKING ASSASSIN SERIES Volume 1 Farah Cook Books Reviews

City of Skies follows Nora hunt as she trains to be a Raider and discover the truth about her father and her identity.

The author creates a vast and and vivid fantasy world, where much of the land is still a mystery and exploration is a deadly undertaking. That's where the Raiders come in, braving the unknown to uncover Viking secrets from ages past.

The characters are interesting and the story is quick paced, keeping you interested until the astonishing climax. A definite read for any fans of Hunger Games or Divergent Series, and a great read for YA and Fantasy fans alike.
I heard about this series and wanted to read the first book since a while. After downloading it to my kindle, I was from the very first page hooked and was drawn veraciously into Nora’s world. The plot is very fast paced, and the genre is a great mix of sci-fi, fantasy, dystopia and even Norse Mythology. Wow, I just love this book and different characters.

The world building is very authentic and the author shows a new realm evolving after the Vikings. This world is fantastic and very rare. Structured into three divisions, East, where Nora grows up, West and North bearing connotation to the “real world” and it seems easy to follow the virtues of each world. What I really like is the blend of simplicity and complexity merging and forming something new in YA fiction that I have not seen before. I’m totally hooked and have immersed into this fantasy.

For example, Nora’s character in a complex world ruled by a republic that fell corrupt after they were elected and overthrew the Empire. This I find intellectually outlined by the author, who plays with new and exciting ideas and blends them into something original- which is very hard to do, but she does this really well I think and tops it with a historical theme like the Vikings which makes it excellent and a must read.

Nora is drawn into a mystery of finding out who she really is once she finds herself in the West the riddles begin. She meets Frederick, who is mysterious and arrogant, but he also wants to help Nora and has some kind of connection to her I think. He hides his soft side behind a hard mask and that’s what makes him real and believable. He too carries a Viking symbol on his wrist. This I find intriguing, as I want to know what it all means. The author throughout gives small hints about the Norse theme, and I like that, because I know very little about it. It’s almost being drip feed in order to solve the puzzle. Ragnarok which is the Viking doom gets introduced bit by bit also leading into a big mystery of the artifacts Nora must find as a raider.

The central plot is very thought through, clever, mixed with continuous mystery, riddles and quests keeping the suspense high. Nora is a strong character, and what drives her personally is her quest to find her dad. He was also a raider, but we don’t know what happened to him. Lots of interesting questions here. Will she find him? What will their relationship be like? Does he have all the answers she seeks? Is he still alive?

The many quests are fun and smart, and I love the way Dock Harbor is portrayed. A place for academics it seems, where the raiders make themselves fit in as heroes that are on a unique mission to save their world. Again, a very unique blend of a world within an existing world. Dock Harbor reminds me of a university campus, and that warm familiarity is pleasant and well shown, giving the story a great exposition.

Towards the end, when Nora climbs the icy mountains searching for the artifacts, is well-written and action packed. The suspense is very gripping. I’ve never been to Antarctica, but it felt like being in a bleak and barren place and then finding heaven. Nora also comes to term with her feelings, which she’s in conflict with. It’s almost her flaw, the inner battle she has with herself, her inability to trust people around her, her strength which she has to hide, the mystical tattoo on her back.

This story is packed with so many interesting things. It’s so fresh and innovative, and it kept me turning the pages to find out what happens next. And although the end is not entirely a cliffhanger there’s resolution because Nora discovers who Karen is, and that leads the story into a new episode.

The part where Nora meets Allan is extremely suspenseful. Karen is another person holding secrets. When Nora speaks to Frederick who knows a lot about their Viking past, some of the pieces in the puzzle begin to form a picture. Has Nora deliberately been kept in the East to hide something that the Lumini Lords are after? What’s the Empire’s role? What will happen when she joins the elite raider circle? Will she befriend Magnus and what about her friendship to Frederick?

The questions never stop, and that’s the reason I love this book. I have an urge to find out what happens. I want to live in this world, a mix of post Viking new world with fantasy and mystical creatures. I actually looked some of them up, and they’re from Norse mythology. Like the Nøkken on page one.

The first book has been a new discovery, and I didn’t quite expect it. It kind of doesn’t follow any of the rules in storytelling, and still does, setting its own mark in in multiple genres, which makes it unique, because I’ve not seen any other author do this so well.

I’d love to see Nora’s character develop. She’s strong, beautiful and fearless. I can’t wait to read the next book, City of Vikings. I’m sure it will be even better and giving me some of the answers I seek.

Highly recommended first book in the series.
A must read for anyone who likes Vikings and fast pased adventure. I started the book in early evening and I couldn't put it down till morning. ( I had to finish it)
The Autner Farah Cook has a way of capturing your interest immediately. Her next book in the Viking Assassin Series can't come fast enough.
This is a novel based on Norse Mythology, which is part of why I ultimately decided to give it a try. Most authors focus solely on Egyptian/Greek Mythology when they write stories like this. I was not disappointed in this novel.

We follow Nora Hunt as she navigates her trials in the world of the Raiders. She has no idea who or what she is, but over time she finds out.

There was so much I loved about this book. The characters were all interesting, and even though it occasionally felt like the plot was obvious, it ended up not being that obvious. Plus, though Nora has abilities that make her slightly more superior, she can't control them. So she really only has a mild edge over everyone else and her perils are still terrifying.

Even though this book is Norse Mythology based, as a reader you don't need to be heavily versed in the mythology. Farah does a wonderful job of explaining the mythologies readers need to know.
I downloaded this book because I am always interested in discovering new authors. I was not disappointed, Farah Cook delivers! An encompassing saga, through creative world building, a storyline that is believable, action series that work, vivid characters with human traits and frailties, fears that are heartfelt and emotions that are driven by passion. I purchased the second book in this series and cannot wait to begin the next journey in Nora's awakening, if you will. Thank you Farah Cook, I look forward to reading this complete series and more of your work in the future. Well done, mam' well done!
Great Read. I love anything Vikings anyway, due to my heritage. Great book for teens and older to read. This book brought me on a journey with Nora to become a Elite Raider like her dad and find her true identity. Suspense and action it keeps you wanting to know what happens next. What all magic does she hold? Is Frederick really her enemy or is he really her friend? What Lies ahead for Nora? Will she find her father? Will all her questions be answered? Will she learn how to use all her magic?
