When Hafren is invaded, two youths, Shuh and Ufh, set off to warn the different people in different areas of the land. Along the way, the encounter various forms of evil, and learn how to overcome these evils. It is a journey, not only through their own land, but into themselves as well. Faith and friendship help get them succeed in their mission.

From the moment I started reading this short tale, I could not help but be reminded of the Lord of the Rings. The story, to me, has a very similar feel to it. It is clearly a fantasy tale, involving friends, focusing around an important journey. Not a lot of time is spent on exposition, instead starting the story literally in the middle of an action scene. For adult readers, this might seem abrupt, and in a longer novel I think this would be an important aspect of the story to develop. However, for younger readers, this might not seem as important. We never really learn a lot about Shuh and Ufh as characters, with the story instead focusing on the journey. Again, in a longer novel, I think further character development would be necessary, but for the purposes of this story, it seems to be a non issue.

The book is marketed as Christian Fantasy Fiction, so it was not surprising to me that there was heavy emphasis on God and Jesus. What I did find unusual is that in a book where everything else was fantasy, the Christian aspect was quite literal, spelling out the literal gospel message. I personally think this would have worked better as an allegory, as we traditionally see in fantasy books, like the aforementioned Lord of the Rings, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. It just seemed a little odd that a fictional world, totally unrelated to reality, would worship the literal Christian God.

All in all, the story is a good example of the battle between good and evil. It would be most appropriate for middle grades readers, due to its short length. Also, the lack of detailed exposition and character development would leave many adult readers frustrated and unable to fully engage in what is, at its heart, a very good story.

Hafren A Fantasy for the Young at Heart Craig Dressler 9781478150329 Books Reviews

Hafren was a quick read - fun and adventurous, but not too deep. I would recommend it for reluctant readers who are looking for something that moves at a fast pace and for adults who are looking to encourage young readers with something wholesome. I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Hafren A Fantasy for the Young at Heart did not live up to my expectations of the young fantasy genre. I felt as though the story developed too rapidly with very little reference to the "back story" of the plot. If there was an introduction of prologue...I missed it. Although I spent some time wondering a bit about the character names, the adventure held my attention throughout the reading. Even though this wasn't an advanced reader copy (ARC), there were several typographical errors. Overall, Hafren...was a quick read; finished it in one hour.
Hafren A Fantasy for the Young at Heart by Craig Dressler is an interesting read. A simple fantasy for youngsters Hafren is the story of two young Huh , Shuh and Ufh, as they travel from one adventure to the other in a world where an evil leader of the Horroh, Ugh, is trying to take over their world. When their ruler, Prince, does not listen to their warnings they decide to do what they can to defeat the enemy until the Prince realizes the truth. Through trial and trouble they find an ally in the villagers of Noggin and together they go to battle. Dressler, in simple and non-threatening words, tells of battles, disagreements, forgiveness, and faith so that the very young can understand and enjoy this fantasy. It is the story of the journey of young Huh who save the world with the help of their neighbors and grow up in the process, they just do not grow up too much for young readers. A good introduction to the fantasy genre for the young Christian reader. Not Tolkien but maybe the first step in his direction.
Shuh and Ufh, two youths set out on a quest for the good of all. The Horroh are planning on attacking surrounding lands. The two youth from Huhland must warn the others. Each place they went they were held as captives until the message they delivered is proven to be true. It is a harrowing adventure with much danger to self along treacherous terrain. There is also a creature called a Garrow that comes up from the sea and burrows tunnels and destroys and kills everything that gets in it's way.

Along their journey pride tends to foil their intentions and the evil they seek to destroy gets a stronghold whenever pride is evident.

In this book the author teaches that becoming prideful can lead us into temptation. But if we present ourselves with humility it leads us to righteousness. Asking God for forgiveness will restore humility and help us to defeat evil within us and in the world.

We must trust in God and endure our trials and tribulations with patience and prayer. God is there every step of the way.

Okay young people let's put on the Armor of God and battle the temptations of evil at every turn! Reading this book will help you find the way.

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 4 out of 5. Only because I had a hard time getting past the first few pages. So don't make the same mistake I did by assuming the whole book would not be interesting. As I continued to read I found it to be an enjoyable read with an inspiring message. I would very much have liked some colorful illustrations depicting the characters and there surroundings. I had a hard time getting an image of the characters in my mind.
